Plater Chair of the Liberal Arts\, and Adjunct Professor of American Studies and Africana Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The lecture is at 7 pm on September 15\, 2022\, in the Heritage Room at the WIU University Union. Free and open to the public\, the lecture is sponsored by the WIU Departments of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, Mathematics and Philosophy\, and the Mary Olive Woods Trust.\nThe descendant of the first Arab American immigrants to Southern Illinois\, Professor Curtis has authored fourteen books on Muslim American\, African American\, and Arab American history and life\, among them Arab Indianapolis; The Call of Bilal: Islam in the African Diaspora; Muslims in America: A Short History; and Islam in Black America: Identity\, Liberation\, and Difference in African-American Islamic Thought. Dr. Curtis is a graduate of the University of South Africa (DLitt et Phil)\, Washington University in St. Louis (MA)\, and Kenyon College (BA). His academic interests include Arab American studies\, Islamic studies\, Africana religions\, and US history. He is co-founder of the Journal of Africana Religions.\nProfessor Curtis has served as a summer director for National Endowment of the Humanities seminars\, and received fellowships from Fulbright\, Luce\, Carnegie\, NEH\, the American Academy of Religion\, and Andrew Mellon. Courtois’ Creations will be bringing a selection of their items\, they are a comfy everyday fashion boutique with affordable accessories\, gifts\, and clothing in sizes small-3X! Stay tuned to see if Quesal Puppet Troupe and Lake Hill Winery will be joining us! \nCups of grain to hand feed the alpacas with will be available for $4/cup (cash only). We’ll also have tables set up with our alpaca products for sale. Fishing is allowed\, bring your own pole (we don’t have any available). The beach has toys for kids to play with\, this is a family friendly environment. \nNo pets\, no smoking\, and no chasing the alpacas. Please be kind and respectful to others.
