SUMMARY:Chris Madsen to Perform on Our Front Porch
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThe Western Illinois Museum\, in partnership with the Western Illinois University School of Music\, is pleased to welcome musician Chris Madsen on Friday\, March 10th\, as part of the monthly Jazz series being offered at the Museum.  The doors and cash bar open at 4:30 with music at 5:15 and 6:15 pm. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. \nSaxophone player\, Chris Madsen is the third visiting musician in the series designed by WIU Music Professor\, Whitney Ashe\, to connect WIU music majors with professional musicians. Madsen will join the ranks of other world-class musicians to perform at the Museum with the HAT Trio\, a group made up of WIU jazz faculty members Matt Hughes on bass\, George Turner on guitar\, and Whitney Ashe on piano. A review by Carlo Wolfe\, for Downbeat Magazine\, writes “Chris Madsen’s compositions delve into balladry\, the blues\, and a modernism that edges on the abstract—but remains accessible.” \nThis year’s series concludes with Wayne Coniglio on April 14th. The series will return with a new roster of visiting musicians in September 2023.  Check the Museum’s website for dates for the 2023-24 season of LIVE Jazz performances. \nLocal support for the series is provided by the Performing Arts Society. Additional support is provided by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nThe Western Illinois Museum is located at 201 S. Lafayette Street\, one block south of Macomb’s Courthouse Square. For more information\, call the Museum at 309.837.2750\, text 309.837.2613\, or email info@wimuseum.org. More details can be found on our website and social media channels.

SUMMARY:Build a Board Game: An eight-week Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a step-by-step workshop to turn your creative ideas into a board game. This eight-session workshop starts Sunday\, January 29th\, and meets twice a month. The workshop is recommended for ages 9 and up\, and both individuals or teams of 2 to 3 people are welcome to participate. To cover the cost of materials the suggested donation is $10 for an individual or $15 for teams. Space is limited and advanced registration is recommended. Visit the Museum’s website at www.wimuseum.org or call 309.837.2750 to sign up.\nIn this workshop\, board game designer Rok Locksley will walk you through the steps necessary to create your own game\, learning about traditional game mechanics and innovative spins. Each session will cover topics ranging from the history and cultural impact of board games to learning what makes a game enjoyable. The workshop is great for families who want to engage in an activity together\, friends who want to create an interesting two-player game or solo folks who want to build their own game. There will be an opportunity to playtest your homemade board games in April and a final celebratory reveal that coincides with Lizzie Maggie’s birthday on May 7th.\nThe workshops will be held twice a month on Sundays from 1:30-3:00 pm at the Western Illinois Museum. Following are the dates and topics for each session.\nJan 29th – Intro and History: Explore the history and evolution of board games and learn about game themes and types.\nFeb 12th – Good Game: Learn what makes a good game and learn traditional game mechanics such as drafting\, resource management\, pushing your luck\, and so on.\nFeb 26th – Game Changer: Develop your game and push it to the next level. Start designing cards/pieces and start building a working prototype game.\nMarch 12th – Game Time: Proto-type handmade games are presented\, and themes are developed.\nMarch 26th – Balance: In this session\, we will talk about how to keep your game from being broken or unbalanced. Look for loopholes\, inconsistencies\, and design/rule conflicts.\nApril 3rd – Game Demos: We will visit the local game store and test-run our games with the public.\nApril 23rd – Final Match: We will talk about how to finalize your game with finishing touches\, and how to eventually publish\, Kickstarter\, or otherwise develop your game.\nMay 7th- Celebration: An interactive event where we celebrate the birthday of the inventor of The Landlords Game\, Lizzie Maggie\, and reveal our finalized games. One game will win a funding award that can help put the game into production.\nThis workshop is co-organized by the Western Illinois Museum and the Macomb Park District.\nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council. Additional funding was provided by a grant from the Illinois Humanities\, with funds from the State of Illinois American Rescue Plan Act.\nThe Western Illinois Museum is located at 201 South Lafayette Street\, one block south of Macomb’s Courthouse Square. The building is handicap accessible and there is free parking available. SUMMARY:Dallas Brass @ Macomb High School
DESCRIPTION:Since its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine\, the Dallas Brass has become one of America’s foremost musical ensembles. The group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion\, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges. The Dallas Brass repertoire includes classical masterpieces\, Dixieland\, swing\, Broadway\, Hollywood and patriotic music. According to Mr. Levine\, “a Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family. Our ideal audience has a range in ages from 5 to 95. Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music\, while showing our audience how much we enjoy what we do.” In addition to their solo engagements\, the Dallas Brass appears with symphony orchestras nationwide. Symphonic credits include the Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel\, New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson\, and the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero. The Dallas Brass has performed at Carnegie Hall\, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, and has toured overseas to Europe and the Far East. They have shared the stage with the late Bob Hope\, have performed for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush\, have appeared on the CBS “Early Show\,” and their music has been used numerous times on the television show\, “The Young & The Restless.” The ensemble has released six recordings: Debut\, Dallas Brass II\, A Merry Christmas with Brass\, Windborne\, Nutcracker and American Musical Journey. The Dallas Brass has a strong dedication to working with young musicians\, frequently going into the public schools to present clinics and workshops for students of all ages.
