DESCRIPTION:The Western Illinois Museum welcomes musicians Vicki Mayo and George Turner\, and historian \n\n\n\nSterling Kernek for a program that explores the Great American Song Book on Friday\, August 18th. \n\n\nDoors open at 4:30 and the program begins at 5:00 pm.  Cash bar will be provided by Hy-Vee Catering. \n\n\nThe event will be held at the Western Illinois Museum\, located at 201 South Lafayette Street\, one \n\n\nblock south of Macomb’s historic Courthouse Square.  There is a $5 suggested donation at the door to \n\n\nbenefit the museum’s programs. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe program is designed to transport listeners back to a “golden age” of jazz standards traveling from \n\n\nthe early 1920s and the late 1950s.  Historical commentary will point out influences on that music and \n\n\nhighlight reasons for the lasting appeal of these well-loved songs.  The expressive vocals of Mayo \n\n\ncomplimented by Turner’s well-honed and thoughtful guitar playing\, will give a new appreciation of \n\n\nthese favorites.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFor more information contact the Western Illinois Museum at 309.837.2750 or info@wimuseum.org.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAbout Vicki Mayo \n\n\n\n\nAlthough Vicki Mayo was formally trained to sing in operas\, her favorite genre is jazz.  While living in \n\n\nNew York City for 17 years\, she had various gigs and jobs\, most notably as a vocalist assisting Joe \n\n\nRaposo\, the Music Director of Sesame Street.  After returning to the Midwest\, she worked as a high \n\n\n\nschool choir director and often performed with jazz pianist Ann Colllins. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAbout George Turner \n\n\n\n\nGeorge Turner has worked full time as a jazz guitarist and guitar teacher since 1993. Turner holds \n\n\nmusic degrees from the University of Illinois and has worked as an instructor at the Conservatory of \n\n\nCentral Illinois in Champaign\, and University of Illinois. Currently he teaches at Western Illinois \n\n\nUniversity and leads his own groups playing straight ahead and Latin jazz\, as well as blues\, funk and \n\n\nrock. In 2000 he released the CD Slip\, Don’t Fall\, featuring his original compositions. He continues to \n\n\nperform regularly throughout Illinois\, the Midwest and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAbout Sterling Kernek \n\n\n\n\nSterling Kernek worked as a professional historian from 1971\, the year he received his Ph.D. degree \n\n\nfrom the University of Cambridge\, until 2002\, when he retired from the History Department at \n\n\nWestern Illinois University. DESCRIPTION:Come ride through the corn fields and pasturelands of McDonough County IL. Campus Students for Christ invites you to participate in their first annual bike ride to support their bicycle ministry on the campus of Western Illinois University. The bicycle ministry exists to help serve\, encourage\, and support international students at Western Illinois University. On Saturday July 22nd the ride will start and finish at Maple Avenue Christian Church on the south edge of Macomb and take you southwest of town to enjoy hills\, hollers\, and flat land just outside of town. There will be 2 separate distances for the ride: ~10 mile (easy) and ~30 mile (moderate). Families and beginners will be strongly recommended for the 10 mile ride while more advanced riders will be using the 30 mile route. The 10 mile trek will be for beginners with a few small hills but mainly flat easy riding\, while the 30 mile route will be much more challenging with many hills to climb as you circle your way out of town and back. On your trip you may see an Amish owned farm or maybe a horse and buggy on the road\, plenty of corn and cattle\, all while enjoying the fresh smells of country life in the Midwest. So come enjoy a morning ride with us in Macomb\, Illinois then let us know how we did so we can make it better for your return trip in 2018!!

DESCRIPTION:Reptiles and Amphibians of Illinois\nSaturday\, July 15\, 2017 – 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.\nCome join the park natural resources coordinator at Argyle Lake State Park and learn about the many reptiles and amphibians found at the park and across Illinois. A few live specimens\, which may include a nonvenomous snake\, a box turtle\, and frog(s)\, will be available for viewing (and optional handling). Children will receive handouts to learn more about these interesting creatures and experience many hands-on activities! Meet at the park’s Pioneer shelter for this program.
