DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning or afternoon of paddling and enjoying nature on beautiful Lake Argyle. Kayaks paddles\, and life jackets are being provided by the Friends of Argyle. Ten adult kayaks and 2 youth kayaks (for ages 5+) are available\, so space is limited to the first 12 people to register for each tour. Two times are being offered each day (10 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.) and each outing will be about 2 hours. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the parking area near the dam/spillway for this program. DESCRIPTION:Michael Mahoney “Painting”\nOn View: August 25 – September 26\, 2025\nReception: Tuesday August 26\, 4:30-6:00 pm\nUniversity Art Gallery\nWestern Illinois University\nMacomb\, Illinois \n  \nRetired Western Illinois University Art Professor\, Michael Mahoney\, will have his solo exhibition\, “Painting”\, on display August 25 through September 26 at the Western Illinois University Art Gallery. \nA reception for the artist will be held Tuesday\, August 26\, 4:30-6:00 p.m. The artist will speak about his work at 5:00 pm. \nMichael Mahoney is a painter based in Macomb\, Illinois. Born in Detroit\, Michigan\, he is the eldest of ten children. His interest in art began early\, and by high school he had committed himself to becoming a professional artist. \nMahoney earned both his undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts degrees in painting from Wayne State University in Detroit. Following his graduate studies\, he spent five months in Italy studying its rich artistic heritage and producing new work. This formative experience continues to influence his practice. \nUpon returning to the United States\, Mahoney began teaching at several colleges and art centers in the Detroit area. He later accepted a full-time faculty position at Western Illinois University\, where he taught for fifteen years. Now retired from academia\, he works daily in his studio in Macomb\, continuing his lifelong dedication to painting. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nParking will be allowed near the gallery starting at 4:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of stargazing at Argyle Lake State Park with retired WIU astronomy instructor Tom Van Heuklon and hobby astronomist Larry Knicl. \nWe will have the opportunity to observe Mars\, Pluto and the Moon and many deep sky objects including star clusters\, nebulae\, other galaxies\, and the varying seasonal constellations. \nThese programs will be held at the parking lot near the park’s Sunset shelter (1st left turn upon entering the park). \nFor your comfort\, bring a chair or blanket\, insect repellent\, and a flashlight. To make viewing safer\, observing will be done using a telescope connected to a video screen\, rather than a telescope eyepiece. \nIn the event of inclement weather or poor visibility\, these programs may be canceled\, so call before heading out if the sky isn’t clear.
