DESCRIPTION:The Western Illinois University Community Art Program will be presented on Sundays from March 24 – April 14 at the West Central Illinois Arts Center and in Garwood Hall on the WIU campus. The free program is for students in first through eighth grades. Classes will be held from 1 – 2:30 p.m. and from 3 – 4:30 p.m. \nThird and fourth grade: Through creating sculptures\, students will explore what animals do\, how they move and where they live. Over the course of four class sessions\, students will design an animal (real or imagined) out of recyclable materials\, learn a plaster wrapping technique to strengthen their sculpture\, use painting techniques to fabricate the texture of the creature and construct their animal’s habitat (real or imagined). \nTo pre-register for the class\, contact Sarah Warner at SM-Warner@wiu.edu.

Initially\, the Center was established in response to a student protest\, which voiced the concerns of African American students at the time. Originally\, called the “Black House\,” since 1969\, the GBCC has been committed to academic excellence\, educational opportunity\, personal growth\, and social responsibility\, to the Western Illinois community and the world. \nRededicated in 1970 as the first landmark named after the poet\, author\, and educator\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, the cultural center has hosted influential leaders such as Ruby Dee\, Ossie Davis\, Issac Hayes\, and Nikki Giovanni.
