Text of Query: Need Help determining the identity of the BAIRD who was or had a photography studio in Colchester, Illinois sometime between 1880 and 1930's. Also trying to determine the name of the local undertakers during the same time period. Any help of direction would be greatly appreciated.
Note from the webmaster:
The BAIRD name in Colchester, Illinois, was also associated with clay mining. In the 1890 Business directory in the Colchester Independent newspaper, the photography business was "Godfrey & Baird".Colchester's undertakers included
(1) During the late 1800s, the Walty & Carson Hardware offered undertaking services in Colchester.
(2) Walter Farmer was an undertaker ca. 1908. His father Ed Farmer, owned a general store. Farmer's undertaking business was destroyed by fire in 1910.
(3) Frank Williams, Sr. operated a funeral home for about 30 years (early 1900s), which was sold at auction in 1934 and purchased by George Jones (Jones Mortuary). (Jones Mortuary does NOT have the records from the Williams home, though).
(4) In the early-to-mid 1900s, Frank Williams's son Frank Williams, Jr. operated a second William's funeral home across the street from his father's funeral home. The house Williams Jr. operated from in the 1920 & 1930s was built by James W. Stevens who opened the famous Stevens Hotel (now the Hilton) in Chicago.
(5) Jones Mortuary (who purchased William's Sr.'s building, etc) is still in operation (2004) by the Carson/Jones family.
