Esophageal Manometry and 24 Hour pH Probe Testing

The tests listed below are those that your physician has requested for you at McDonough District Hospital. We will try to explain what will be expected of you and what you can expect during these tests.

  1. Please arrive at the hospital's admitting desk on time so that there is no delay in your procedure.

  2. You may eat normally until two hours before the exam. Then you are limited to liquids until the time of the exam.

  3. Please stop taking all stomach medications a week before the scheduled test. These include: Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex, Nexium, Prilosec, Zantac, Tagamet, Axid, Reglan. If you have questions regarding these, please call our office (836-3387). It is important that these medications are out of your system to provide accurate results. You may take medications such as Carafate, Tums, Mylanta, Rolaids, etc., until midnight the day prior to the exam. Please take all of your other medications (for example: blood pressure pills) as directed.

Esophageal Manometry

A tube will be inserted through your nose and into your stomach. As the tube is slowly withdrawn it will take measurements of the muscles in your esophagus. This helps to determine if there is a problem pushing food down into your stomach resulting in food getting "stuck." To make this more comfortable, a medicated "numbing" spray is used. This part of the procedure takes about two hours and includes setting up the second half of the test described below.

24 Hour pH Probe

A very small tube will be inserted through your nose and into your esophagus then taped in place. The tube will be connected to a monitor in a small carrying case to determine if acid reflux is causing your problems. While this probe is in place, be sure that you don't take any stomach medicines, as this will void the test (and you will have to repeat it).

While the test is taking place, we encourage you to eat those foods, which would normally bother your stomach. After 24 hours of testing the tube will be removed which only takes a minute of your time. You can resume all of your stomach medications once the tube has been removed.

Please be sure to bring a list of your current medications and feel free to call the office if you have any questions (836-3387).

Examples of clear liquids include the following, which are not colored red or purple:

Water
Tea
Coffee without cream
Carbonated beverages
Clear juices (apple, lemonade, or white grape)
Chicken or beef broth/bullion
Plain Jello - liquid or set

Clear, hard candy

Solid foods, milk, or milk products are not allowed.

Please Note: As a reminder to you, the patient, it is your responsibility to please contact your insurance company before a procedure in order to receive pre-certification clearance. This phone call will give assurance of their payment. Thank you.
